Two dual-SIM variations of existing Android phones, the Samsung Galaxy Y DUOS and Samsung Galaxy Y Pro DUOS look very different but are aiming at roughly the same market segment.

The "Y" in the handset names indicates that this is a low-end device (remember "SRWMY - Samsung Really Wants My Yak"). The current non-DUOS versions retail for less than €150, and we don't expect there to be a huge price hike with these dual-SIM versions.

The Galaxy Y Pro DUOS has a 2.6" 320 x 240 pixel touchscreen display, a QWERTY keyboard, a five megapixel camera on the back and a front-facing camera for video calling (which the standard phone lacks), plus dual-SIM capabilities. The handset runs Android 2.3, although in our opinion you might struggle to use some common Android applications because of the small size of the touchscreen. It looks almost identical to the standard Galaxy Y Pro.

If you compare the more conventional touchscreen Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y DUOS the differences are rather more marked. The DUOS version of the Galaxy Y has a bigger screen (3.15" compared to 3.0") with 240 x 320 pixels resolution, an improved 3 megapixel camera on the back (the original has 2 megapixels) and a smarter design. Again, this is an Android 2.3 device with dual-SIM support.

Dual-SIM devices such as this are popular in some markets and very rare in others. In particular, Russian consumers like phones like this and it is not surprising that these DUOS devices will be available there first, later this month. Other countries will follow, and hopefully Samsung will make more DUOS phones available in the months to come.

A very significant upgrade to last year's popular Galaxy Ace, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus is a moderately priced Android smartphone which will probably cost less than €300 when it hits the shops later this month.

The Galaxy Ace and Ace Plus don't have that much in common. Inside is a 1GHz CPU paired with 512MB of memory and 3GB of internal flash, on the front is a 3.65" 320 x 480 pixel touchscreen display - the old Ace had an 800 MHz processor, 278MB of RAM and 158MB of storage with a smaller 3.5" display of the same resolution.

Running Android 2.3, the Galaxy Ace Plus comes with a number of Samsung add-ons for social networking plus Samsung's TouchWiz user interface. Because this is an Android phone then it also has access to thousands of applications from the Android market.

On the back is a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and the Galaxy Ace Plus supports 3.5G and WiFi connectivity, has integrated GPS, an FM radio, Bluetooth and a multimedia player plus a microSD memory slot.

The only downside that we can see with the Ace Plus is the screen resolution. Most other similarly sized displays have around 480 x 800 pixels, more than twice the pixel count of this Samsung device. That means that certain applications, especially web browsing, may appear a bit grainy. Of course, the screen is also a lot cheaper which makes the Ace Plus less expensive to buy.

One oddity with the Ace Plus is the name - Samsung changed their naming convention last year, and this might perhaps be less confusing if it was called the Samsung Galaxy M instead, but presumably Samsung want to capitalise on the success of the Galaxy Ace by re-using the name.

Inside is a large 1300 mAh battery, and the whole package measures 115 x 63 x 11mm and weighs 115 grams.

Samsung say that the Galaxy Ace Plus should be available later this month in Russia, followed by a rollout throughout most of the rest of the world afterwards.

While the rumour mill is awash with speculation about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung have in the mean time announced the Samsung Galaxy S Advance.

Don't get excited by the name. Samsung have broken their own very new naming convention by giving the high-end "S" designation to an upper-midrange handset. The Galaxy S Advance is one step down from the existing Galaxy R, which you would think would earn it the name of "Galaxy M", but apparently not.. but it is very much a straight upgrade to the original Galaxy S handset, which perhaps explains the name.

So, although it's a very much cheaper relative of the Galaxy S II and Galaxy R, the Galaxy S Advance is still a pretty decent handset and is still better then most Android devices in use today. There's a 4.0" 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED display, a dual-core 1GHz CPU combined with 768MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera on the back plus a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, and the Galaxy S Advance runs Android 2.3.

Internal flash memory is either 8 or 16GB and it also comes with a microSD slot. All the usual features are here, including GPS, WiFi and 3.5G support plus a few Samsung specific software add-ons on top of the usual Android application base. Inside is a large 1500 mAh battery, and the whole package weighs 120 grams and measures 123 x 63 x 9.7mm.

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance is a pretty good handset, burdened with a stupid name thought up by somebody in the marketing department. Think of it as the Samsung Galaxy M instead. Samsung say that this smartphone should be available from February in Russia and will then be rolled out in most other regions worldwide.
